Curb appeal is vital if you're selling your house and a satisfying lifestyle enhancement if you plan to stay in your home for years to come. Updated windows not only improve energy efficiency and lower maintenance costs, they make your house look more appealing as well. This is the perfect time to consider what windows will look best in your home and choose new windows to modernize your home's look. Older windows require maintenance -- scraping, painting and caulking. Newer windows feature low maintenance cladding, a protective exterior covering that requires minimal maintenance. Many newer windows also make cleaning easy with a convenient tilt feature that allows you to wash them from inside your house. When replacing windows to your home unlike any other project, the amount of time to complete a replacement window job is minimal, it usually takes one to two days.
Aluminum Replacement Windows
Aluminum replacement windows were really the only replacement windows available in the past. But as technology got better, other materials such as vinyl and fiberglass came on the scene. While these new materials outperform aluminum on a number of counts, aluminum still remains the material of choice for specific applications such as commercial buildings, multi-family units and residential homes where large oversized windows are specified. The reason is that aluminum replacement windows are still the strongest and most economic replacement window available. Aluminum's durability and high strength-to-weight ratio allows it to be formed into custom sizes. And because aluminum has a higher mass (weight) than vinyl it is able to block out noise better -- another attribute sought after in commercial applications.
While aluminum frames do a good job at keeping the rain and wind out, where they lack is keeping the heat in. Aluminum or metal frames conduct heat easily, earning them a high U-value (the higher the U-value, the more heat a frame loses). The U-value of aluminum frames can be as high as 2, compared to vinyl or wood frames which have low U-values (0.3 to 0.5). Aluminum frames also tend to feel cold to the touch and are prone to condensation. Aluminum replacement windows are still good windows and are much better than wood or metal frame windows.
Vinyl Replacement Windows
Vinyl replacement windows are made primarily from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a product that offers many advantages. Unfortunately, it often looks chunkier than wood or metal windows because vinyl isn't strong enough to be made into ultra-thin parts. The other problem is that the texture is unmistakably plastic. On the other hand, except for washing the glass, vinyl replacement windows are virtually maintenance free. You can’t paint them, but you can get them in a number of different colors. What's more, the color goes all the way through the material, so dings and scratches are nearly impossible to see.
Vinyl replacement windows have always had some advantages over aluminum and steel. Metal is a highly efficient heat conductor-a great property when it comes to pots and pans, but not so slick when you're talking about window frames. As window glazing has improved, the difference in insulating value between the glass and the frame of a metal window became greater and greater. Good quality vinyl windows are nearly equal to wood windows in their overall insulating value, but not just because of the frames. Compared to old shop-built wood double-hung windows, the factory weather stripping in modern vinyl windows allows only a fraction of the air leakage around the sash. As a rule, air infiltration is even more important than insulating quality in preventing heat loss. Vinyl replacement windows are the number one choice today because they are not prone to condensation.
